On June 16 and 17, the stage of the KTO Theatre will host its latest premiere: the spectacle “The Plague”, directed by Filip Rudnicki. The story is based on a 13th-century German legend, later recorded by the Brothers Grimm as “The Pied Piper of Hamelin”.
Retelling this very story, the spectacle transforms it into a parabolic tale of the modern world, where societies increasingly entrust their fate to charismatic populists. Yet, to rule, these leaders require an enemy—whether real or imagined. In “The Plague”, that enemy is the rats, but it could just as easily be immigrants, minority groups, or people with differing views. However, this struggle against a Baumanesque Other comes with a price: freedom, stripped away slowly, piece by piece. To ease the discomfort, sweet propaganda pours steadily from the magic flute.
