The Krakow Dance Theater’s new production, “opera.exe,” which has been enthusiastically received, will be performed on our stage twice in the near future. We invite you to join us on October 8 as part of the 3rd edition of the Body and Time Festival, and on November 6. Tickets for both performances are still available.

“opera.exe” is a production by the Krakow Dance Theater, choreographed by Eryk Makohon, which reimagines the fates of opera heroines by subverting classic librettos. From the stories of Medea (Luigi Cherubini), Salome and Electra (Richard Strauss), and Turandot (Giacomo Puccini)—traditionally portrayed as victims of passion, madness, or fate—the production draws out themes of resistance, emancipation, and radical opposition to the patriarchal order in which they were trapped. The bodies of the performers from the Krakow Dance Theater become vehicles of transformation, spaces in which the old operatic narratives are encoded. Humanoid bots “hack” the opera librettos, attempting to transcend the stories programmed into their systems. This deconstruction of the narrative is reinforced by Piotr Peszat’s music, which incorporates classical sounds (arias performed by Anna Zawisza) into a modern composition. Excerpts from librettos and recognizable motifs become material for deconstruction—a musical palimpsest that resonates with the performers’ physical actions.
