Another edition of the great celebration of dance is just around the corner. On May 23, city squares and the stages of cultural institutions will come alive with genuine dance emotions. Our theatre will host a special performance of “Checkmate!” directed by Eryk Makohon.
“Checkmate!” is a dance performance inspired by the game of chess. Six performers, connected through a shared costume, create a choreography that reflects both cooperation and the tensions that arise from sharing space.
The characters, inspired by chess pieces and brought to life through the performers’ movement, refer to important social issues. The Queen symbolizes power and the costs that come with it. The King serves as a metaphor for the struggle for dominance, political divisions, and cultural conflicts. The Knight represents movement, competition, and rivalry; its story reflects the relentless pace of the modern world, constantly rushing forward, sometimes forgetting where it is actually heading. The Pawn is an everyman figure, entangled in globalization, uniformization, and social patterns. Although seemingly equal to the others, the Pawn is in fact limited in access to resources and opportunities for individual growth — a figure dealt the weakest hand in the theatre of the world.

Free admission passes for the performance will be available for pickup at the theatre box office starting May 13.
Kraków Night of Dance has been organized since 2018 and aims to showcase the diversity of dance art and the creative potential of the dance community.
