The Gipsy Marionettist

Strings stretch and smiles arise while each marionette, hand-carved and inspired by members of my family, create a different atmosphere and a different image. Family relationships resolve and extricate, string by string, during this symbolic and entertaining story presenting a daring journey from the former Yugoslavia to Germany and Italy. A pawing and fiery Skeleton, a sweet and ravenous Tiger, a mysterious Oriental Belly Dancer and more.

Informacje o wykonawcy
Rašid Nikolić was born in Bosnia into a family with Roma roots. The war in former Yugoslavia forced them to flee to Germany from where they then moved to Turin, Italy. This experience and his ethnic and cultural background deeply influenced Rašid’s career and artistic production. Having been taught by his grandfather how to carve wood, he perfected his marionette making and manipulating skills in Ukraine, France and Spain. For 12 years now the artist has toured with his show entitled The Gipsy Marionettist (it is also his stage name), which has given him an opportunity to relate to the international audience and share what Roma culture truly is, without stereotypes or generalizations.
