Workshop: Sustainable Production of a Dance Performance

The workshop on sustainable practices in the performing arts is designed for those who create and co-create dance performances and performative events, including producers, choreographers, students of artistic, scenography, and design-related programmes, as well as anyone interested in implementing the principles of sustainability in creative practice.

The programme is divided into two complementary modules that together offer a broad perspective on sustainability in the process of creating a dance performance. We are currently inviting participants to join the first module. More information about the upcoming workshops will be announced soon.

Module I: Sustainable Production and Process Management

The first module focuses on the process of creating a performance — from concept development and research, through planning, communication, and logistics, to the presentation and evaluation of the project. Participants will be introduced to tools that support sustainable approaches to production in the performing arts, taking into account not only environmental concerns, but also economic, social, ethical, and artistic dimensions.

The workshop will be practical and participatory in nature, based on case studies, collaborative reflection, and the analysis of real-life examples. It is designed for those who want not only to create engaging artistic events, but also to do so in a more thoughtful, responsible, and sustainable way.

Module II: Costumes, scenography, and materials

The second module will focus on the material dimension of performance-making — costumes, scenography, material circulation, and the aesthetic decisions made during the design process. Participants will explore contemporary challenges related to production in the fields of fashion and visual arts, as well as practices that support a more responsible approach to creation, including the use of recycled materials, conscious sourcing, and reducing overproduction.

The workshops combine organisational and artistic perspectives, demonstrating that sustainability can be not only a response to contemporary challenges, but also a catalyst for more conscious, coherent, and meaningful artistic practice.

We are already pleased to invite you to the first workshop module, “Five Dimensions of Sustainability in Three Levels of Engagement” — a practical workshop exploring strategies for implementing sustainable approaches in the production of dance performances.
